Dear friends,
I’m pleased to announce the release of my newest book, Night Owl Prayers: A Prayerbook. This book was published in conjunction with Smyth and Helwys Publishing. When Stephanie and I adopted our daughters in 2021, I left my pastorate and took a job as a night auditor running the night shift at a local hotel so that I might spend more time with them. As I worked I started scribbling down these prayers—and the book is the culmination of many of those prayers that I wrote during the middle of the night.
This book is written for those who might work during the night, who feel lonely at night, for those who need prayer during the nighttime hours, and for those situations that call for prayer in the middle of the night. We live in a 1st shift world but there are plenty of us who find ourselves awake during the 3rd shift. I’m especially grateful that The Very Rev. Gary R. Hall, PhD wrote the introduction to the book. Dean Hall is current President of Bloy House, The Episcopal Theological School at Los Angeles. He previously served as the 10th Dean of Washington National Cathedral, and I consider him a dear friend.
Be sure to check out the other endorsements below! You can order Night Owl Prayers on Amazon or on Smyth and Helwys Publishing’s website. I would be so grateful for your support in this new project. Most importantly, I’m grateful to be with you on this journey.
Sincerely yours,
Rob
The Rev. Dr. Robert W. Lee, IV
Endorsements:
Spiritually, what could be more daunting than the things that go bump in the night? What an illuminated idea Rob Lee had to devise prayers for us in those difficult nocturnal hours and moods, and what ingenious execution! Night Owl Prayers: A Prayerbook meets a profoundly undealtwith need for people who struggle in the dark, and might (with Lee’s able guidance) find comfort and hope in God’s presence in their darkest moments. A gift you’ll pull out your flashlight to read and pray at 3 a.m. — The Rev. Dr. James C. Howell, Senior Minister of Myers Park United Methodist Church, Charlotte, North Carolina
For all of us who suffer from insomnia—whether occasional or chronic—Night Owl Prayers is a godsend. This collection of brief meditations and honest prayers can help us “sabotage sleeplessness,” deriving something good (a heart reaching out to divine love) from something crummy (a night of tossing and turning in bed). — Brian McLaren, author and public theologian
The ancient words of St Patrick’s Breastplate—Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me—become flesh in this honest book of ingenuous devotions. Rob Lee invites us all to join him in opening every aspect of our lives to Christ’s blessing and transformation. — The Rev. Dr. Samuel Wells, Vicar, St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Church, Trafalgar Square, London
Rob Lee’s prayers are little doorways into the dark of a night where both God and human need are revealed. . . . God is up to something at night and up to something in this beautiful book . . . use it as your own doorway into the ways in which God is working in the nights and days of your life. — The Rev. Dr. Gary R. Hall, President of Bloy House and 10th Dean of Washington National Cathedral
